Simple Promise Farms is a non-profit farm located in Elgin that empowers individuals through meaningful work, service, and community. Guests to our farm will have a guided tour of our three-acre garden, interact with our farm animals, harvest some take-home produce, and sample snacks made with our veggies.

Enjoy locally brewed beer and delicious food in the hill country as you learn about Beerburg’s commitment to local food and drink.

Join Beerburg Brewing and Slow Food Austin for a private tour with chief herbalist and Beerburg owner Trevor! Guests will enjoy an on-site herb walk, where they will learn about the use of locally foraged herbs in brewing, along with a sample of Beerburg’s new spring menu and a flight of beer selections.

Join us on Friday, January 8th for our Annual Beer and Cheese Tasting Event with (512) Brewing Company and Antonelli’s Cheese Shop! This time, it will be a virtual tasting.

Antonelli’s Cheese pros will talk us through a tasting of six different featured beers, each paired with a cheese (for a total of six cheeses). Plus, fun flavor combinations will be thrown in with some other food pairing bites like jams and fruits.

All items can be picked up with Antonelli’s Cheese Shop curbside service from 1-5pm the day of the event at Antonelli’s Cheese House OR at (512)Brewing. You’ll select which pickup site you want when purchasing tickets.

At 7pm, you’ll click on the zoom link. Certified Cheese Professional Casie Wiginton and Owen Sawyer, Head Brewer of (512) Brewing, will be leading this yearly favorite.

scholarship opportunity for the 2020 tofga conference

Scholarship Application Deadline: Friday January 3rd, 2019

Slow Food Austin is offering a scholarship to the 2020 TOFGA Annual Conference from January 16 – 18, 2020, in Temple, Texas. This conference focuses on education and advocacy for Texas farmers, ranchers, and gardeners who practice organic and sustainable measures. Hundreds of attendees from around the state are expected to come and build community around like-minded, sustainable practices. The scholarship will cover the ticket for the entire two day conference, the Friday night banquet, and a travel stipend of $75. For an opportunity to win this scholarship, please submit the application below. The deadline for submission is Friday, January 3, 2019. The scholarship winner will be contacted directly by Slow Food Austin.

As advocates and members of Slow Food Austin, we strongly encourage, but do not require, our applicants to be members of Slow Food USA. While this is not a requirement to apply for the scholarship, it is an additional way to stay up to date with current events in the community. Join us for our Fall farm tour with farm-fresh snacks at New Leaf Agriculture.

Their Mission:
Connect refugees to sustainable farming opportunities by operating community gardens and a commercial farm.

New Leaf Agriculture is a nonprofit social enterprise of MRC ( Multicultural Refugee Coalition). They support refugee families in 20 community garden plots around Austin, and just last year launched a commercial farm in nearby Elgin, TX. The New Leaf team employs organic, sustainable practices while training refugee farm apprentices for paid agricultural work that is dignified, in-demand and familiar from their countries of origin.

Meg Erskine will talk about the Multicultural Refugee Coalition’s work to create livelihood opportunities for refugees through social enterprise, including the New Leaf Farm. Established on a conservation easement, the farm grows directly for local makers and markets, as well as operating a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription.

Join Slow Food Austin at Farmshare Austin this November 2nd. Assistant farm manager, Erin, worked as a chef before embarking on her farming journey. She’ll be preparing the farm snacks with food she and the rest of the Farmshare team grew. Team members from Farmshare are acting tour-guides, and refreshments are included.

Remember to wear close-toed shoes as we’ll be walking around the farm fields and orchard.
