Mushrooms! Beer! Pie! Oh, my! Venture out to the Texas Hill Country for a tour at Logro Farms, a “full cycle” sustainable farm at Ceres Park Ranch, home of Jester King Brewery and Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza. Logro uses spent grains from Jester King to grow delicious mushrooms, herbs, and an assortment of veggies. In turn, the fruits of Logro’s labor become ingredients in Jester King’s beer and Stanley’s menu items.

Ticket price includes a tour of Logro Farms, Logro’s “Sustainable Farming with Mushrooms” class, and a takeaway of fresh oyster mushrooms and herbs. The tour kicks off by picking-up on Jester King’s free brewery tour. We encourage ticket holders to arrive early for a pint or two at Jester King or stay afterwards for Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza.

ALL ticket revenue goes back to the farm so come on out and support the farmers who are keeping your food good, clean, and fair!

Join Slow Food Austin for a Slow Session with Meridian Hive Meadery at the Draught House on Oct 19th. Mead or honey wine is the oldest alcoholic drink known, yet many are still unfamiliar with the brewing process and varied flavors. The guys behind Meridian Hive are truly passionate about their craft and will take us through a journey of side-by-side honey varietal and mead tastings.

About Meridian Hive

Meridian Hive was founded in 2012 by three explorer’s with a sense of adventure and a vision… to reinvent the perception of mead. The craft of fermentation is what brought them together. They originally met through local home-brew meetings in 2008 and found a similar passion. As ingredients were explored, characteristics were discovered, and variables minimized, glorious recipes were born. As the three shared their ideas of mead with each other, the journey started to coalesce. A collaboration was inevitable. When the mead started flowing in 2013, Meridian Hive finally got the chance to share their glory of exploration with all who are willing to take the journey.

Come learn how honey bees are safely removed and relocated. Daniel “DJ” Schmalz is a hive and swarm capture service extraordinaire specializing in chemical free bee removals and rescues. He strives to educate each and every individual and business he serves on the importance of the North American Honey Bee. Every hive removed is happily relocated to local farms, beekeepers or, in very rare cases, back to nature.

2014 snailblazer award

Our Snailblazer Award is the highest honor given to recognize individuals that exemplify the Slow Food movement’s ideals of “Good, Clean, and Fair.” In honor of his considerable and distinctive work as one of Austin’s most treasured local food pioneers, Eric Polzer of Wink received our 2014  Snailblazer Award. The award was presented at our Grub Trivia event held on Sunday, August 17. Carol Ann Sayle and Larry Butler of Boggy Creek Farm, our 2013 Snailblazer honorees, presented the award.

Eric acts as the chef de cuisine and forager of Wink, an Austin dining institution for more than a dozen years and one of the first area restaurants to embrace local sourcing.

“Chef Eric Polzer was one of the first Austin chefs to realize that fine dining relies on quality ingredients – fresh and organic – to be truly ‘fine,’” said Carol Ann Sayle, Boggy Creek Farm co-owner and recipient of the 2013 Snailblazer Award. “Once he discovered our tomatoes, he was at the farm five days a week because Wink’s very popular shrimp-stuffed tomato appetizer depended on the flavor of the tomato as well as the shrimp. Through the years, Eric remains a staunch supporter of local farmers, ranchers, and dairymen.”

Actively sourcing sustainably and locally, Eric visits Boggy Creek Farm, among many other local purveyors and suppliers, twice a week to create the restaurant’s changing daily menu. He’s been a major driving force and influence in gaining awareness around the Slow Food movement and creating a dining culture in Austin that supports it. As Carol Ann puts it, he’s one of the first Austin chefs to “really ‘get’ the connection between the soil and the plate.”

Slow Food Austin is offering two scholarships to the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance 8th annual Farm and Food Leadership Conference in Bastrop, Texas on September 15th and 16th . This conference focuses on the policies that affect our local farms and food production, bringing together experts on a wide range of topics including GMOs, raw milk, urban farming, and more. 

There will be panel discussions, talks by local farmers and sustainable food system advocates, and many opportunities to network with local activists. The full schedule is available here. For additional information about the Summit, please visit the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance Website.

The scholarship will cover the full cost of registration.

Whether you’re a cooking connoisseur, a food-biz wiz, or gastronome novice, Slow Food Austin challenges you to join its second annual Grub Trivia fundraising event on August 17th at Saengerrunde Hall. Up to 30 teams will compete to win the surprise grand prize and the honor of being named the quickest slow foodies in town.

Emceed this year by John Antonelli of Antonelli’s Cheese Shop, the food-focused, pub-style trivia game will also include round prizes; a “grub crawl” of tastings from more than a dozen of Austin’s finest “slow” restaurants and artisans; happy-hour priced local brews, wines, and spirits; raffle prizes from local businesses; and its famous halftime hog butchery by Bryan Butler of Salt and Time Butcher Shop and Salumeria with cuts auctioned by Andy Langer.

Slow Food Austin will also present its Snailblazer Award to a member of the food community who has made a significant impact for the cause of “Good, Clean, and Fair Food.”

Slow Food Austin is offering a full scholarship to the Chefs Collaborative’s 6th Annual Sustainable Food Summit, September 28-30, 2014 in Boulder, Colorado. This three-day conference brings together hundreds of chefs and professionals from the food industry for the opportunity to connect, get inspired, and discuss how professionals in the food industry can improve the national food system.

 
The schedule is packed with good meals, talks and discussions led by prominent chefs, producers, and farmers, and hands-on sessions, such as tastings and foraging. The full schedule is available here. For additional information about the Summit, please visit the Chefs Collaborative website.
 

The scholarship will cover the full cost of registration and include a stipend of $500 for travel and lodging. The scholarship recipient will be reimbursed upon receipt of purchase of travel and lodging.
